Thoughts on girlhood incited by Ferragamo SS25

The dichotomy presented between grown verses young is something that stood out to me in this collection. This interpretation arose through considering the fit and the social capital attached to each clothing of item, but also the personal nostalgia that was awoken in me upon seeing these pieces. Ferragamo’s spring summer 25 collection made me think of the innocence and enjoyment within childhood but also the want and societal push to grow up too fast. As fashion emulates and reflects life and replicates our past and present experiences, thought processes, interests and passions, in some respects, I saw the collection as an imitation of my past life.

From Bows, to Lace, and Cheetah Print: Since everyone’s got their degree in fashion policing - a think piece.

Given the way every time I open TikTok there’s a new form of identity or aesthetic that’s being commodified, it’s made me question is our generation obsessed with being detached from reality? Many of us like to play ‘the main character’ but now people are personifying and morphing into new characters biweekly, ranging from the “clean girl” to currently the “mob wife”. Regardless, this phenomenon has clearly made apparent that there’s a juxtaposition between what fashion is and the way we act. Wi...

Changing eras of beauty in the West

According to the Golden Ratio of Beauty Phi- a scientific measure of physical perfection, the likes of Jodie Comer and Bella Hadid being consistently regarded as the most beautiful women in the world this year, as often, has genuinely made me question the fickle concept of beauty. However, my main point of discussion today isn’t the subjectivity that comes with beauty, but rather the objectivity that is attached to it. What’s deemed as beautiful and desirable has always been fleeting, whether i...

Blackness and Luxury

Everything in life seems fickle, from the seasons to our appearances, nothing tangible ever seems to remain constant. Feeling present in everyday life is something requiring intentionality, becoming harder and harder to make the prime focus of our day. The discussion on ‘luxury’ and what a ‘person in luxury’ looks like is something often had within the Black community, with people often succumbing to the façade of an extravagant lifestyle. While everyone has their goals and aspirations in whatev...

'Lift me up' review- Rihanna's return?

On Friday 24th October, ‘Lift Me Up’ was released as the lead single for the soundtrack of the highly anticipated movie, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which was released in cinemas on Friday 11th November in the UK. ‘Lift Me Up’ can be described as a soft ballad, with the addition of harps, harmonies, and layered humming within the backing vocals offering the song a calming and reminiscent tone. Upon my first listen, after the initial excitement of hearing Rihanna’s voice on a new song had wor...

Gorgeous, gorgeous girls: a think piece

Beauty is a currency that both can open and close many doors in society. It’s the forefront of many habits we have, the things we care about and keeps the cycle of consumerism up and running. Most of the time, our indulgence in beauty is subconscious, but many times it’s also intentional. Whilst viewing beauty as a currency may be problematic as it arguably promotes (self)objectification and sexism, for the simple sake of this article we’re going to accept it as such. Beauty is primarily seen as...

Don’t Look Up Review: When Fiction Comes to Life

This is definitely a movie that made me stop and think “uh oh” throughout. Not because I felt fear for the characters or because the storyline was a mystery, but it was precisely the fact the ending was predictable from the beginning. ‘Don’t Look Up’ is an apocalyptic satire, to say the least; whilst they were awaiting and reacting to their impending death in the film, a parallel is clearly drawn between us as viewers because (not to sound like Jennifer Lawrence’s character Kate Dibiasky) so are...

I’m Still NOT Over It and Here’s Why: Summer Walker Album Review

Summer’s highly anticipated third album finally came to bless our ears on November 5th as an extension from her previous album ‘Over It’. Whilst fans have been made aware of the trials and tribulations with her now-ex through her previous album, news of their relationship turning sour only had me thinking one thing- this next album is going to be sweet. I’m aware that the average person may not be thrilled hearing that one of their favourite artists is heartbroken, however, considering her track...

As many of us are already aware, the pandemonium that occurred at Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival in Texas on 5th November resulted in the death of 10 fans aged between 9 and 27, leaving hundreds more injured. This tragedy resulted in traumatised concertgoers and transformed the lives of those that lost loved ones in the blink of an eye, but what does this mean for Travis, for his fans and the future of his concerts?Casualties occurred around 21:30 as an excess of fans rushed towards the stag...
